Welcome to the ORIGINAL McMaster University Contemporary Medical Acupuncture Program, sponsored by the McMaster University Department of Anesthesia, and co-founded in 1998 by Dr. Angelica Fargas-Babjak and Dr. Alejandro Elorriaga Claraco.

The Contemporary Medical Acupuncture Program founders created this medical acupuncture training course on neurofunctional acupuncture and electroacupuncture as the first comprehensive medical acupuncture training course for health care professionals offered by a Medical University in Ontario, Canada.

The McMaster Contemporary Medical Acupuncture Program is a 300 hours Certificate Program provided by the McMaster University Department of Anesthesia and approved by the McMaster Health Sciences Continuing Education Department.

The Contemporary Medical Acupuncture Program has been designed following the tenets of best evidence practice (evidence-based medicine), and the topics of the curriculum include the latest contemporary scientific medical knowledge about the treatment of pain and dysfunction using neurofunctional acupuncture and electroacupuncture.


The Contemporary Medical Acupuncture Program is skill-based, clinically oriented, with about 100 hours devoted to practical workshops on neurofunctional acupuncture and electroacupuncture, surface anatomy palpation, needle insertion skills, anatomy laboratory, condition-specific blueprint treatment design, special techniques workshops, and treatment of live cases.

Over 3,000 health care professionals have graduated from the McMaster Contemporary Medical Acupuncture Program since 1998, achieving their training goals.

Participants in the Core Training Program are awarded a McMaster University Contemporary Medical Acupuncture Program Certificate reflecting participation on 300 hours of Continuing Education with group learning and self-directed components

The Core Training Program meets the membership requirements of the Canadian Contemporary Acupuncture Association (CCAA)

The Core Training Program meets training requirements for Board Certification by the American Board of Medical Acupuncture (ABMA)

The Core Training Program meets the training requirements for Membership or Fellowships of the American Academy of Medical Acupuncture (AAMA)

College of Chiropractors of Ontario – “CCO Members who successfully complete the McMaster Contemporary Acupuncture Program would comply with the educational component of the Standard of Practice of the CCO – S017.

The Contemporary Medical Acupuncture for Health Professionals program meets the criteria for qualification training as required by the Alberta College and Association of Chiropractors (ASAC) to practice acupuncture – The program is approved by the ACAC for Continuing Competence credits.

The College of Physical Therapists of British Columbia (CPTBC) has accepted the McMaster University – Contemporary Medical Acupuncture Program (CMAP) as a recognized Dry Needling Education Program.

CMAP meets the requirements of the CMTO Acupuncture Standard of Practice.

Approved for CE Renewal Credit by the State of North Carolina Board of Chiropractic Examiners.

Approved for CE Hours by the South Dakota Board of Chiropractic Examiners.

Approved for CE Hours by the North Dakota State Board of Chiropractic Examiners.

Approved for CE Hours by the Oklahoma Board of Chiropractic Examiners.

Recognized by the Worker Safety and Insurance (WSIB) of Ontario for payments to acupuncture providers. A “Regulated Health Professional”, who has received appropriate training at an educational organization which trains and certifies individuals to practice acupuncture and who adheres to the standards of their Regulatory Colleges, can be approved to provide acupuncture treatment.” “Health Professionals should request pre-approval from the WSIB before they begin acupuncture treatment since each request is looked at on a case by case basis and it is not a given that the WSIB will allow acupuncture in every case.”
